Your rights regarding modes of course delivery is described in Letter of Understanding (LOU) 16 of the Collective Agreement.
LOU 16.1: There are five possible modes of course delivery.
The five allowable modes of course delivery are the two long-standing modes, “In Person” and “E-Learning” (DE), and the three alternative modes, “Blended”, “Hyflex”, and “Online Synchronous”. An alternative mode of course delivery cannot be imposed on you. If you use the In Person, Blended, or Hyflex mode of delivery, your assigned classroom must be able to hold all of the students registered in your course. This means that you should not be teaching some students in person in your class and others via livestream in an “overflow” room. If the classroom does not hold all registered students, the Administration must mount an additional section of the course.
LOU 16.2: No non-E-Learning (“DE”) course has an associated mode of course delivery.
For example, this means that your Dean cannot tell you that, due to the class size and the limited availability of large classrooms, a course must be taught using an online synchronous or hyflex mode of course delivery. An alternative mode of course delivery cannot be imposed on you.
LOU 16.3: The Dean or Chair may ask a tenured member to consider teaching using a particular alternative mode of course delivery, and the member may say no.
The Dean or Chair cannot have such discussions with untenured members, since they may feel unduly pressured to agree to such requests against their wishes.
LOU 16.7: A Member should not be asked to record their lectures or class meetings.
LOU 16.8: A Member should not be asked to post course materials on CourseLink.
If actions that are identified above as not being allowed have occurred or if you have other concerns about how the Administration has handled your teaching assignment or teaching assignments in your Department in general, please contact UGFA at facassoc@uoguelph.ca.
